Fabulous: Free February 2012 Calendar Wallpaper

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The February 2012 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled Fabulous. While most of my calendar designs are somewhat minimalistic I wanted to go even further this time round by using a very limited colour palette, subtle textures and a very basic geometric layout. It’s really difficult not to overdo it as I have a tendency to always add one more thing. I hope you like it!

Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The January Calendar Wallpaper is entitled Make Shit Happen (MSH). I’m not one to make new year’s resolutions often, but this time round I made one: Do more self-initiated projects. This wallpaper should be a reminder, so at least this month I won’t forget. While this design might not be suitable for office use I still hope that you enjoy it and take the message to heart: Don’t just come up with ideas, turn them into reality. Whatever you do, make sure you have fun!

Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The Decmeber 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled Flake. I suppose the inspiration behind this one isn’t hard to crack. It’s all about winter, snow & Christmas at the moment so it made sense to come up with a related design. Truth be told, the plan was to create a minimal Christmas tree, but it turned out that you can make an even nicer snowflake by copying, rotating and scaling the same tree over and over again. As a special treat this festive season there’s 2 versions of the iPad & iPhone wallpapers available, one for the lock screen, one for the home screen. If you like it then please help spread the word.

It’s an absolute pleasure to release these 11 Free High Resolution Light Grunge Textures. Each one is a stunning 3200px wide which makes them perfect for web and print purposes. I’ve recently bought a graphite stick and these textures are the result of experimenting with different surface textures. You can incorporate them into your backgrounds or use them to lightly distress your type and designs. Though I’m sure that you can think of loads more ways to use them. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The October 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled X. This is a reference to October being the 10th month of the year and it’s been subtly integrated into the design. I had a lot of fun working on the texture for this wallpaper, apart from using one paper texture everything else was done entirely in Photoshop with filters. 10 Free Hi-Res Textures: Rolled Paint Grunge Set 2

It’s been a while since I released a new texture set and imagine my surprise when I realised that I never published these 10 Free High Resolution “Rolled Paint Grunge” Textures that were used for the Rolled Paint PS Brush Set 2. If you’re a regular reader then you know that I love my resources extra large. That’s why all the textures are a minimum of 3000 pixels in size, making them ideal for web and print purposes alike. The small previews don’t really do them justice so I’ve included a few closeups to show the detail. They’re fantastic for background images or to grunge up your designs, giving them a nice organic touch. You can either download each texture individually or download the whole set at the bottom of the post.

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The September 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Peaked”. The inspiration behind this month’s desktop background comes from vintage film packaging such as used for polaroid. Building layer upon layer I managed to blend the colours together until I was happy with the overall saturation. It has to be said though that the outcome was by no means planned. I usually start with a blank canvas and add a few shapes until I find a layout and direction that inspires me. As always, I hope that you like it.

Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The August 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Centric”. The idea behind the design is of temporal and seasonal nature. August is the “summer month” and as such centric to the seasons. Using the chosen colour scheme I tried to convey the feeling of the different seasons leading up to and lying ahead of the hottest month in the year. The rectangles don’t have a meaning though. I simply like geometric shapes as some of you might already know. Anyways, I hope that you like this month’s free calendar wallpaper. If you do then please help spread the work. Thanks!

12 Free Bicycle Silhouette Vectors

I’m pleased to release these new freebies: 12 free bicycle silhouette vectors. With the Tour de France in full speed and hitting the first serious mountain stage today there’s no better time to get your hands on these beautiful bike vectors. I’m a huge fan of the TdF and it’s great to see two riders from Luxembourg in the top 5. As you can imagine there aren’t many sport discipline where I can root for someone from my home country, let alone 2.

The set contains vectors of racing bikes, BMX, tandems as well as some bicycle pictograms. While I don’t ride a bike myself, like many designers I’m in love with the shape and geometry of bicycles. There’s something intrinsically beautiful about their clean, minimal lines.

Bicycle Silhouette Vectors Preview

All of these were created by hand in Illustrator and for the first time I could put the variable width tool introduced in CS5 to good use. Each bike is a group of different solid shapes so that you can easily alter the colour of the frame or change the spokes of the wheels. As with all the freebies released on the blog these bicycle silhouette vectors are free to use in both personal and commercial projects. Enjoy!
