FYI Monday: The West End Show by Brand Nu

For his first self-intitiated solo show ‘The West End Show‘, graphic designer and illustrator Radim Malinic, aka Brand Nu, has taken the multifarious, vibrant and frequently taxing area of London’s West End as his inspiration. Radim explores the magical and bustling part of the capital in a series of elaborately illustrated poster designs, bringing together classic old century design with the dazzling neon future of the 22nd century.

I was at the opening on Friday night and loved it. Radim really managed to capture the essence of each of the 10 areas. The show runs until the 2nd March at the Nancy Victor Gallery in Fitzrovia. Fabulous: Free February 2012 Calendar Wallpaper

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The February 2012 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled Fabulous. While most of my calendar designs are somewhat minimalistic I wanted to go even further this time round by using a very limited colour palette, subtle textures and a very basic geometric layout. It’s really difficult not to overdo it as I have a tendency to always add one more thing. I hope you like it!

Ryohei Hase is an freelance illustrator and artist based in Tokyo, Japan. Every once in a while I come across a portfolio that simply blows my mind. This is one of them. The level of detail in Ryohei’s digital paintings is insane. The muted, yet vibrant, use of colour in the mostly gloomy images really add to the overall feel. This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The January Calendar Wallpaper is entitled Make Shit Happen (MSH). I’m not one to make new year’s resolutions often, but this time round I made one: Do more self-initiated projects. This wallpaper should be a reminder, so at least this month I won’t forget. While this design might not be suitable for office use I still hope that you enjoy it and take the message to heart: Don’t just come up with ideas, turn them into reality. Whatever you do, make sure you have fun!

Time has flown quicker than ever and I can’t believe that it’s already the end of 2011. It’s been a great year, both personally and professionally, and I’ve got plenty of new things lined up for the future already. There will be more inspirational posts, more freebies and a little surprise as well. I can’t wait to reveal all in the new year.

What’s Your Favourite Colour? [2011 Edition]

When it comes to design, colour is one of the most important tools in our arsenal. Choosing the right colour sets the mood for the design and gives a great layout that final touch. Over the last 12 months I’ve asked 35 of my favourite designers and bloggers one simple question: What’s your favourite colour? Although, as everyone will tell you, there’s nothing simple about the question. It’s really hard to find that single colour to identify with. Chances are that some of these answers are already out of date, they do however reflect the state of mind of the interviewee at the time of sending me their answer.

Rather than only having a list of all the favourite colours I’ve also made a nice infographic further analysing all of the the different answers. Let us know who your colour buddy is!
