Heat: Free July 2010 Calendar Wallpaper

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. July 2010 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Heat” though I did not include the title in the design. For the first time the wallpaper is now available for the iPad and iPhone 4 with retina display. I hope you like it. Feel free to leave feedback in the comments section.

Patrick Monkel is a freelance graphic designer from the Netherlands who works under the name of Monk Studio. You might have come across his website which has been featured in many “minimal webdesign showcases”. Today, I want to focus on Patrick’s actual design work. His style is very popular at the moment, using all the lightning techniques many want to learn. What I like most about the work is that Patrick Monkel manages to get very vibrant images with the use of mute colours. This just goes to show the amazing talent of this outstanding designer. Although the art of Andy Gilmore from Rochester, NY was not new to me I just re-discovered it today. It’s not often that you see something like this. What’s Your Favourite Colour?

Colours tell a lot about someone’s personality. So in an effort to learn a bit more about my favourite designers and bloggers I started a 1-question mass interview to ask them what their favourite colour is. Although the colours they chose are very different these 40 creative minds have one thing in common. They are at the top of their game and I respect them deeply for their contributions to the design community. So please visit their websites/blogs and discover outstanding articles, free high quality resources and gorgeous designs.
As a bonus I made an A2 poster containing all the favourite colours with the respective names for you to download as pdf for free. All you need to do is take it to your local print shop or simply use your inkjet at home to print it.

Final Thoughts:

If you want to know more about your favourite bloggers and designer I highly recommend reading “Music of Design: What do you listen to?” on Outlaw Design Blog. Danny Outlaw asked a handful of popular designers (including me) to share with him what type of music gets their creative juices flowing and what they listen to while designing. The results are quite surprising and range from classical to metal tunes.

For those of you who are interested in the meaning of colours I recommend reading “Color in Web Design: Color Symbology“.

Pablo Alfieri, born in ’82 in Buenos Aires, is an amazing graphic designer and illustrator. His work reminds me sometimes of Pete Harrison (aeiko). I really enjoyed flicking through his portfolio entitled Playful, even though the navigation could be a bit more organic. I especially liked the poster mock-ups. It’s a new take on the whole “I-hold-the-poster-with-both-hands” presentation. You’ll see what I mean.

Awesome T-shirts available at Urban Outfitters

Whenever I go into London City I have to go into Urban Outfitters. It is by far my favourite clothing shop. As always I had to make a choice: which t-shirts to buy and which to leave for a later day. That’s when I decided to write a post about the great tees you can get from Urban Outfitters. Seriously, if you got the chance to visit one of their stores then do it. Apart from the great clothes they’ve got funny accessories and even sell Lomo cameras. So these are the t-shirts I’m particularly fond of. Which one do you like best?

Junk Food Clothing:

Junk Food Clothing are a master when it comes to retro shirts. I actually bought a “Mr. Grumpy” from their range. From Charlie Brown to Rolling Stones, they got it all, in a nice vintage look.

Chunk Clothing:

Chunk Clothing is another brand to keep an eye on if you’re looking for retro t-shirts.

Jakes Clothing:

Jakes Clothing is best known for their retro sports/olympic collection. The Torino and Sapporo ones are in my wardrobe. I love them!

I’m totally hooked on deviantArt and today I want to show you my latest discoveries in the Mixed Media/Abstract category. I just love abstract art. I’ve had the portfolio of Californian designer Mike Orduna bookmarked for some time now. Today I finally found some sparetime to really look into it and make a selection of his best works. Mike is better known under the alias of FATOE and his style could be described as being messy, vibrant and colourful. I’ll let you decide for yourself how you would like to characterize is. His portfolio is really extensive and his client list includes quite big names. Apart from finding his location (LA) and age (32) there wasn’t much information on him. Erik Soderquist is 23 years old, comes from Tacoma Washington where he still lives and I would call him an all round artist. One of his designs has been featured in the CMYK Lovers post on fudgegraphics. Erik tries himself at retro grunge and photography with success. This is only a small selection of his portfolio. There’s much more to be seen on deviantArt. The most fascinating thing is to see his progress. Can’t wait to see new material.
