What’s Your Favourite Colour? [2011 Edition]

When it comes to design, colour is one of the most important tools in our arsenal. Choosing the right colour sets the mood for the design and gives a great layout that final touch. Over the last 12 months I’ve asked 35 of my favourite designers and bloggers one simple question: What’s your favourite colour? Although, as everyone will tell you, there’s nothing simple about the question. It’s really hard to find that single colour to identify with. Chances are that some of these answers are already out of date, they do however reflect the state of mind of the interviewee at the time of sending me their answer.

Rather than only having a list of all the favourite colours I’ve also made a nice infographic further analysing all of the the different answers. Let us know who your colour buddy is!

Centric: Free August 2011 Calendar Wallpaper

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The August 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Centric”. The idea behind the design is of temporal and seasonal nature. August is the “summer month” and as such centric to the seasons. Using the chosen colour scheme I tried to convey the feeling of the different seasons leading up to and lying ahead of the hottest month in the year. The rectangles don’t have a meaning though. I simply like geometric shapes as some of you might already know. Anyways, I hope that you like this month’s free calendar wallpaper. If you do then please help spread the work. Thanks!

Bram Vanhaeren is a 20-year old digital artist and illustrator based in Antwerp, Belgium. I came across Bram’s work a while back and only just now managed to feature him. His work is vibrant, powerful and makes use of the full spectrum of colours. Whether it is typography, portrait illustrations or photo manipulations Bram’s done it and it always looks amazing. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The July 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Frequency”. This desktop background uses a lot of vibrant colours and textures to really make it pop. Many of the details have been hand drawn in Photoshop, while the main elements have all been assembled in Illustrator using a mix of gradients and blending modes. It is very reminiscent of the ever popular retro futuristic design style. By the by, if you’re interested in the different stages of creating the design you can see a few shots on Dribbble. Book Review: Print Handbook for designers

I’ve been lucky enough to get my hands on the Print Handbook for designers by the kind folks of the UK-based Media Collective. So today I’m gonna give you a short, but concise insight into this book, call it a book review if you like. Not to worry though, there’s gonna be a lot of pictures too. Let’s have a look then, shall we.

What’s in it?

The print handbook is a very handy tool which every designer doing print work can benefit from. It is full of printed experiments and examples, plus a whole load of reference material. Here’s a few examples of the stuff that’s included:

Most common paper sizes chart
Examples of different blacks printed on gloss paper
Selection of brochure folds
Unit conversion chart
Text point sizes comparison

The handbook takes out the guesswork that happens when your job goes from screen to print. It even features a ruler all around the (fold-out) cover.

Final Words

The Print Handbook has now found its place on my desk. It’s a great reference for every print designer and I can highly recommend it. There’s loads of references that you can find on the internet, but it’s always better to have real-life, physical examples. For more info about the book and to buy it go to www.printhandbook.com.
