Fabulous: Free February 2012 Calendar Wallpaper

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The February 2012 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled Fabulous. While most of my calendar designs are somewhat minimalistic I wanted to go even further this time round by using a very limited colour palette, subtle textures and a very basic geometric layout. It’s really difficult not to overdo it as I have a tendency to always add one more thing. I hope you like it!

I’ve always wanted to try out a minimalistic space-themed design reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Moon. I hope you like the result. It’s an absolute pleasure to release these 11 Free High Resolution Light Grunge Textures. Each one is a stunning 3200px wide which makes them perfect for web and print purposes. I’ve recently bought a graphite stick and these textures are the result of experimenting with different surface textures. You can incorporate them into your backgrounds or use them to lightly distress your type and designs. Though I’m sure that you can think of loads more ways to use them. This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The October 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled X. This is a reference to October being the 10th month of the year and it’s been subtly integrated into the design. I had a lot of fun working on the texture for this wallpaper, apart from using one paper texture everything else was done entirely in Photoshop with filters. Free Hi-Res Grunge Border PS Brush Set + Textures

Today’s freebie set is all about grunge. It’s a pleasure to present to you the latest Photoshop brush set consisting of 11 free high resolution grunge borders. The grunge lines were created by rubbing a graphite stick over straight edges of different objects. As you can see from the banner these PS brushes are great to create grunge borders around your designs as well as to simulate hand-drawn lines. The reason why the lines are diagonal are so that I could make them as large as possible. All lines are between 3000px and 3500px in length. I know that some people prefer to work with textures which is why I made the source files available too. You can download all 11 grunge lines as a single high resolution jpg. All you need to do is cut out the line you require and paste it into your design.

I hope you can put them to good use in your commercial and personal projects. Don’t forget to share them if you like them.

10 Free Hi-Res Textures: Rolled Paint Grunge Set 2

It’s been a while since I released a new texture set and imagine my surprise when I realised that I never published these 10 Free High Resolution “Rolled Paint Grunge” Textures that were used for the Rolled Paint PS Brush Set 2. If you’re a regular reader then you know that I love my resources extra large. That’s why all the textures are a minimum of 3000 pixels in size, making them ideal for web and print purposes alike. The small previews don’t really do them justice so I’ve included a few closeups to show the detail. They’re fantastic for background images or to grunge up your designs, giving them a nice organic touch. You can either download each texture individually or download the whole set at the bottom of the post.

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The September 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Peaked”. The inspiration behind this month’s desktop background comes from vintage film packaging such as used for polaroid. Building layer upon layer I managed to blend the colours together until I was happy with the overall saturation. It has to be said though that the outcome was by no means planned. I usually start with a blank canvas and add a few shapes until I find a layout and direction that inspires me. As always, I hope that you like it.

12 Free Bicycle Silhouette Vectors

I’m pleased to release these new freebies: 12 free bicycle silhouette vectors. With the Tour de France in full speed and hitting the first serious mountain stage today there’s no better time to get your hands on these beautiful bike vectors. I’m a huge fan of the TdF and it’s great to see two riders from Luxembourg in the top 5. As you can imagine there aren’t many sport discipline where I can root for someone from my home country, let alone 2.

The set contains vectors of racing bikes, BMX, tandems as well as some bicycle pictograms. While I don’t ride a bike myself, like many designers I’m in love with the shape and geometry of bicycles. There’s something intrinsically beautiful about their clean, minimal lines.

Bicycle Silhouette Vectors Preview

All of these were created by hand in Illustrator and for the first time I could put the variable width tool introduced in CS5 to good use. Each bike is a group of different solid shapes so that you can easily alter the colour of the frame or change the spokes of the wheels. As with all the freebies released on the blog these bicycle silhouette vectors are free to use in both personal and commercial projects. Enjoy!

This time round I’ve tried to steer clear of my usual abstract / geometric designs and experiment with photography as the main element. The wallpaper still has the vintage touch I love so much. Free Hi-Res Clouds Photoshop Brush Set 2

This latest freebies set contains 17 High Resolution Clouds Photoshop Brushes. The brushes are between 2300px to 2500px large which makes them ideal for both print and web projects. These brushes were sitting on my computer for a while now and I always forgot to release them. They can be used in a variety of ways such as for adding cosmic and nebulae elements to your designs. Why not alter them using the warp and smudge tools in Photoshop. Alternatively you could create simple backgrounds with these for your design. Feel free to share your experiments with us! As always these hi-res Photoshop brushes are free for commercial and personal use.
