Valerie Jar is a 25-year old designer / illustrator based in Salt Lake City. I’m particularly fond of her character illustrations and logo design work. Victor Huckabee, aka Pope Saint Victor, is a designer / illustrator / photographer based in Nashville, Tennessee. I first stumbled upon Victor’s work while listening to one of his playlists on Designers.MX. The music and artwork went well together so I decided to dig a little deeper. I’m glad I did. Victor’s work uses bold typography, cute character illustrations and has that vintage feel so many of us just can’t get enough of. Peaked: Free September 2011 Calendar Wallpaper

This post is part of the free calendar wallpaper series. Each month I create a new wallpaper featuring the current calendar. Looking at the same image over and over again is not very stimulating. Hence having a new desktop background each month should help getting your creative juices flowing. The September 2011 Calendar Wallpaper is entitled “Peaked”. The inspiration behind this month’s desktop background comes from vintage film packaging such as used for polaroid. Building layer upon layer I managed to blend the colours together until I was happy with the overall saturation. It has to be said though that the outcome was by no means planned. I usually start with a blank canvas and add a few shapes until I find a layout and direction that inspires me. As always, I hope that you like it.

Hannes Beer is a graphic designer from Stuttgart, Germany. For the last months he worked on The All Day Every Day Project. The idea is simple, design something new each day. What really impressed me is the dedication and quality of designs that Hannes maintains over this long period. Another cool thing is that he usually gives a short explanation as to what inspired each artwork. Most designs can be described as minimal grunge art with a vintage feel. I’m a fan! Barton Damer is a digital artist from Dallas, TX. I like to describe his art as retro cosmic design, though there’s much more to it. By combining 3D typography with beautiful lightning effects and natural textures he creates stunning works. It comes as no surprise that he’s work with great bands and big skateboarding brands. One highlight of Barton’s career must have been when he was awarded the Digital Artist of the Year Award by Computer Arts, Intel, and 3d World Magazine in 2009. Nathan Shinkle is self-proclaimed creative professional from Indianapolis though he’s worked under the titles of graphic designer, artist, interactive designer, t-shirt guy… to name just a few. Recently he’s been swept up by Adidas where he works as Senior Designer. Nathan’s work has a very minimal vintage feel to it and reminds me of artists such as Scott Hansen, with the difference that he leans more towards the illustration side of this style. Matthias Heiderich is an exceptional photographer from Berlin, Germany. I don’t often feature photography in the FYI Monday series, but as soon as I stumbled upon Matthias’ profile I knew I had to share it with you. The colours are beautiful, the angles are amazing and overall it has a calm, vintage feel to it. This really is just a small selection.
